112 Kloof St
This project reinterprets an existing three-storey apartment block in Kloof Street as a curated living environment for international students, seamlessly integrating contemporary urban dwelling with social engagement. The intervention prioritizes spatial fluidity, material refinement, and a sensitive response to context, transforming the structure into a dynamic yet composed residence that aligns with the vibrancy of its surroundings. Internally, the layout is reconfigured to optimize spatial efficiency, balancing private domains with shared amenities. Apartments are articulated through clean lines, a restrained material palette, and a nuanced interplay of light and texture, creating an atmosphere that is both refined and grounded. The second level acts as a connective threshold, where a poolside café and informal workspaces dissolve the boundaries between leisure, productivity, and social interaction, all framed by elevated vistas of Table Mountain. At street level, the activation of the retail frontage through Bootleggers Café extends the building’s urban presence, fostering an engaging dialogue between the private realm and the city fabric. This layered approach to adaptive reuse and programmatic density ensures that the residence remains both an inward sanctuary and an outward-looking urban participant, embodying a considered balance between retreat and interaction.
